Cervical Prolapse After Childbirth: Impact on Future Pregnancies

Question
About an hour after my last child was born, my cervix came out and the midwife just pushed it back in and made light of it. I haven't had any related problems in the last 2 years. now that i want to become pregnant again, i am wondering if this will have any affect on future pregnancies and will it be likely to  happen again?

Answer
Dear ef,

Cervical prolapse is something that can happen if those ligaments supporting the uterus and vaginal vault become weakened. This can occur from a variety of causes and in your case was likely related to the trauma of childbirth. The only real treatment is exactly what occurred - replacement (as long as there is not too much swelling) and bedrest and/or pelvic rest. As to whether this will affect the next pregnancy - it is something that you will need to note to your doctor and will have to be monitored to make sure that it does not recur during the pregnancy. Premature labor may be a slightly higher risk for a next pregnancy, but this can be monitored/managed as long as your health care provider is aware of the previous prolapse. Do those Kegels!  :-)

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
