Managing Preterm Labor in a Second Pregnancy: A Patient's Experience

Question
I am 34 weeks with my 2nd pregnancy, and am having preterm labor.  I was induced due to PIHT and preeclampsia 3 weeks early with my first baby.  I am having contractions *note i don't feel them, however they must be registering* and am currently dilated 3cm and 75% effaced since Sept. 1st, that I am aware of. I've been in the hospital for 3 days and they are giving me magnesium sulfate and brethene (sp) to stop contractions. Also, this pregnancy is almost exactly 2 years later.
I am wondering if the previous induction of the 1st pregnancy has any effect on this pregnancy, as far as going into such early labor is concerned.

Answer
Hi Joanna,

Well your question has a bit of twist. Your labour was induced ..and wasnt natural with your first baby. However, statistics say, that between 25 and 50 percent of women whom had a premature birth, or early labour will experience premature labour, or birth again.

So there seems to be a relation between the 2 .. So basically it makes it possibility that this is happening due to the circumstances of your first pregnancy.

However, just so you know ..There are many possible reasons why a woman would go into premature labour ..

Infections it the uterus, cervix, and urinary tract can cause an early labour ..Chronic diseases, including high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease and hypothyroidism.  An abnormally shaped uterus or a uterus with a benign tumor (fibroid). Smoking, alcohol use or misuse of other drugs. Malnutrition, and Pre-eclampsia( You've already experience that one).

And also, new studies show that gum disease, the lead in water, some antidepressants, and beleive it or not licorice are all linked to premature labour.

And well ofcourse, over exertion, will definately trigger early labour as well.

You never mentioned any complications with your pregnancy, so I am sure this is just one of those flukes. But you definatly cannot rule out, that this possibly could in relation to your first pregnancy.

Keep your feet up, relax and pamper yourself. And I wish you luck on the upcoming birth of your baby in just a few weeks :)

Take care, and hope this is of some help.
