Understanding Vaginal Discharge in Late Pregnancy: Causes & Concerns

Question
I am almost 38 weeks pregnant with my first child. During the past week I have noticed more discharge, it has been clear or white. However, tonight when I went to the bathroom there was a pale green cottage cheese like discharge. It did not have any odor. I have not been feeling myself the last few days and am very listless. I can't sit still and everything bores me. I also feel like I have the flu, but I don't have a fever, yet I can't stop sweating. Any ideas what this could mean?

Answer
Dear Jaimie,

The increase in the amount of your discharge may just be a gradual loss of your mucus plug OR just the normal increase in vaginal secretions that occurs during pregnancy. The pale green cottage cheese discharge does not fit that description. That sounds more like maybe the start of a vaginal infection. Since you are in your last few weeks, you should be seeing your doctor every week now to be checked. If there is any sign of infection, your doctor should be able to note this with the exam. However, make sure you mention it to him/her.

The listlessness may just be your nesting instinct which often occurs in the last few weeks of pregnancy. The nesting instinct is the name given to the distinctive urge to clean, tidy, and organize that occurs during pregnancy. Many women acutely experience the nesting instinct in the final days of their pregnancy, and this can often be a sign that labor and delivery is getting close.

As I said, be sure to mention the discharge to your doctor. Otherwise, I would not be overly concerned. You are getting near the end of the pregnancy. It won't be long now!  :-)

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
