Conceiving After a Loss: Guidance and Information

Question
Hi,am 30 years, I had a normal delivery on 7th  July 2008 but the baby died 6hrs later (Dr. said it was from natural causes). its now 7wks after and I wish to conceive anytime or immediately. I've also developed strong passion for twins/tripplets. What should I do, because my heart is restless?

Answer
Dear Florence,

Well, first, I personally would be more curious as to a specific cause for a neonatal death 6 hours after a "normal" pregnancy and delivery. "Natural causes" just doesn't seem near specific enough. Have you thought about investigating that further or requesting those medical records?

As to conceiving again - After birth, the recommended interval to wait for the next pregnancy is at least 18 months in order to reduce the risk of adverse birth outcomes. Researchers found that infants born to women who conceived less than six months after giving birth had a 40% increased risk for being born prematurely and a 61% increased risk of low birth weight, compared with infants born to mothers who waited 18 months to two years between pregnancies. The risk for preterm birth, low birth weight, and small size for gestational age increased by 1.9%, 3.3%, and 1.5%, respectively, for each month that the time between pregnancies was shortened from 18 months.

I would also recommend finding a good grief/loss support group to join for awhile. It sounds like you might really benefit from sharing your feelings of loss with others who understand what you are going through. These groups can make a huge difference and be extremely helpful.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
