QuestionI have been a cyclist for years.....is this safe during pregnancy?
AnswerCycling during pregnancy is one of those borderline issues.
On a physical level, since you are well adapted to the high intensity exercise that cycling requires, you can continue to exercise at that level until your belly simply gets in the way. But...
Many fitness specialists and OBGYNs feel that the small but possibly devastating risk of injury to you and your baby due to a collision with another cyclist, car, or road hazard is too high, and therefore advise against road cycling. I concur with this viewpoint. It's better to be as totally safe as possible during pregnancy.
But this is certainly a judgment call on your part.
I suggest that you find other athletic activities, like indoor spinning classes, swimming, aerobic classes, aerobic DVD's, stair climbing, elliptical training, where you can maintain a high fitness level without risk of injury.
Cycling can always be a part of your life, but not necessarily during pregnancy.
