Questionhi, i am 25 and pregnant with my fourth child, firstly an ultrasound at 6wks said i was due the 19th of june 09, but i know my lmp was 1 of sept 09 and we only had sex once without protection just before i ovulated (about 3 days later), so that would make it the 8th of june, just wondering if the sperm can actually hang around for that long? also i had a repeat ultrasound when i was 27 wks lmp (25wks u/s) and the report came back saying that the placenta was aged at 34 wks, 7 wks further than it should have been, as baby was size of a 27wk, the midwife and ob had no idea what this meant and told me to not worry about it, but they sent me for another scan at 34wks lmp (32 wks u/s)this scan came back saying that there was marked degeneration and extensive calcification of the placenta. my midwife again said she didnt know what it meant and not to worry about it, i am just a little worried about whether they should be keeping an eye on the well being of the baby more closely or if i am just being a paranoid mother, i have not been able to find much information on this, if you could help me that would be great!!!! thank you very much, regards anne-marie
AnswerDear Anne-marie
The placental findings indicates agied placenta which may not be able to deliver enough nutrition to your baby. In fact, the lag between your scans and your calculated date can be due to this aging although ultrasound machine can have falacies in calculation up for 2 weeks. However with such placental findings of degeneration and calcification, i would be concerned with a pathologic event rather than instrumental falacies.
It is not [ossible to make a proper diagnosis here and therefore, i urge you to seek a second opinion after full obstetric examination.
The life span of a sperm varies is about 4 days (96 hours)
I hope that these information help u take the proper decision.
Good Luck
