Low-Lying Placenta & Fibroids: Understanding Your Situation

Question
Hello Dr. Rappaport. I was wondering if, in the case of placenta previa, a fibroid can prevent placenta from "migrating" from OS. My fibroid is on the fundus and my placenta is 1.4cm from the OS at 23 weeks. I have tried to find information online at no avail. I would appreciate your opinion on the subject. Thank you!

Answer
If your placenta is 1.4cm from the cervical os, you do not have a placenta previa, but only a "low lying placenta". Even if you have a fibroid in your fundus, the placenta will probably migrate away from the cervical os. However, even if it does not move, as long as it is not covering the cervical os at this time, you will have no problems in later pregnancy.
