QuestionI am 3 weeks on my pregnancy.
After having a sharp pain on my left ovary my doctor had me getting a
hcg count every other day to be sure that the baby was growing properly.
The first test came up with a count of 250.
Secont count was of 779
Third count was of 1900
Since the count was increasing more than double every 48 hours then my
doctor asked me to have a sonogram because he thought that I could be
expecting twins.
I had the sonogram done but it only shows one sac and they couldn't see
a baby yet. The nursse thinks that it is because I am very early in
pregnancy (only 3 weeks).
My count of hcg keeps increasing more than double every 48 hours.
Can I be expecting twins with only one sac?
If it is only one baby then could it be dangerous for the baby the fact
that my hcg is increasing more than double ?
Thanks,
AnswerDearMelina
hCG levels are never reliable alone in making a diagnosis and their normal range is extremely wide. Therefore no conclusion, of any type, can be made at 3 weeks and yes nurses are correct, ultrasound cannot detect a sac at 3 weeks.
I advise a transvaginal ultrasound at 4.5 weeks but this again need to be performed by an experienced sonographer with a high resolution ultrasound machine. If both are not feasible, then a delay of 1 more week is appropriate.
Abnormal rise of hCG occurs in multiple gestations and in a pathologic abnormal pregnancy known as molar pregnancy but the levels in this case is much higher than in your case.
At present, i do not see a reason for your worries until you have the ultrasound.
Best of Luck
