QuestionHi, I am A- and my husband is O+. We have 2 children (both positive). I recieved the Rhogam shot during and after both pregnancies. For my last pregnancy (Aug.,2008) I was given a blood test at 28 wks to make sure I wasn't sensitized and all was ok so I got Rhogam then and after delivery.
My husband and I would love to have one more child but I get worried about how effective the Rhogam shot really is. Is there a chance I could have developed antibodies even though I got the shot? Should I call my OB and request a blood test before I even become pregnant?
Thanks
AnswerDear Ann,
First, I would like to apologize for the delay in answering. Unfortunately, my son required emergency surgery this past week and I have been needed as "nurse mom".
The fact that you have had an injection of RhoGAM with the previous pregnancies means the RhoGAM will be at LEAST 95% effective in preventing sensitization for you and in protecting the next baby. It would be extremely unusual for you to have been sensitized if you had the RhoGAM injections twice during each of your pregnancies. However, if you are that worried, you can always request a test prior to trying to conceive.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
