RhoGAM Shot & Pregnancy Complications: Understanding Your Situation

Question
Hi! I am almost 6 weeks pregnant, i had gone into my ob dr at 5 weeks because i had started bleeding 2 days after taking a home pregnancy test and it saying i was positive. So with concerns i went into the dr right away and she gave me a pelvic exam, urine sample and had some blood work done as well. I later on this week went back for my results and i have an infection in my pelvic area and bacteria in my pee, so i was given medicine to cure those. i was told i have A- blood and they needed to give me th Rhogam shot. I am worried that i may have gotten it too early on in my pregnancy and was un aware that most women get the shot at around 29 weeks or so. My question is will this shot be harmful to my baby, or will i be just fine and have to get a shot further down the rd? Thank you for your time!!

Answer
You are right is saying that most women get this shot around 30 weeks of pregnancy. But an early administration is necessitated in your case because of the bleeding you suffered early on. I do not have the complete details about the bleeding you had, but I would think that you might have had an threatened abortion which has hence stabilized. The occasions when the baby's blood cell can enter maternal circulation are at birth or during an abortion or threatened abortion. It is therefore necessary to give this shot now. this shot will not harm the baby, contrary it is for protecting your baby.
