Mirena Removal: Post-Procedure Bleeding & Provera Use - Patient Experience
QuestionI am 45 years old and have never had children (nor do I plan to ). I had my Mirena coil removed 11 days ago after 8 months of discomfort and constant bleeding. Two days after removal I started to bleed very, very heavily and was passing large clots constantly. I was advised to take Tranexamic Acid 500mg x2 3 times a day and this has helped to stop the flow (and the clots have almost stopped). Now I've been advised to take Provera 10mg 3 times a day for the next 2 months. This seems quite a high dose. My question is what should I expect after taking Provera ? I am worried about my next 'period' too. Should I expect a very heavy flow again and if I stop taking the Tranexamic Acid will I start to bleed again ?
Thank You
AnswerHi Bella,
I believe you have a hormonal imbalance which has caused all of your bleeding. Breakthrough bleeding is a common side effect of provera so chances are you may bleed more, also provera may stop your period completely. I do think you should have been prescribed hormones, such as progesterone, as well as tranexamic acid, which would help the bleeding.
