Understanding Low Progesterone in Early Pregnancy: A Patient's Concern
QuestionHi! I am currently 7 weeks pregnant. This is my 3rd pregnancy. I have twin boys and a daughter who were all conceived through fertility treatments. During the first trimester of both pregnancies I was on Alot of progesterone support. This baby was conceived on my own. I found out at 5 weeks and my ob tested my progesterone. My number was 22. One week later I was tested again and it dropped to 16. My doctor is not putting me on any supplements, and I am afraid this will lead to a miscarriage because I needed support with my other pregnancies. This is not my fertility doctor and I am afraid she is taking my concern too lightly. Any insight would be appreciated.
AnswerDear kate
It is really hard to answer your question.
Fertility treatments usually use progesterone to support pregnancy sometimes even if you have enough, as there is no major side effects to the drug. They give the drug to ensure good support.
In your current pregnancy, it may be suspicious to have a dropping progeststerone level and therefore; a supplement may be useful as a precation since it has no major side effect. However this is not a guarantee that miscarriage will not occur.
Good Luck
