Understanding Blighted Ovum: Symptoms, Progression & What to Expect

Question
Technically I am 8 weeks pregnant today.  I was diagnosed with a blighted
ovum at 7 weeks exactly.  The 7 week sonogram showed a sac measuring to 5
weeks, 4 days but no pole or heartbeat.  Also, my HCG levels were in the
7000 range.  Four days later, my HCG levels were in the 53,000 range and the
sonogram showed a sac measuring at about 7 weeks and a fetal pole
measuring at about 6 weeks.  My dr. says my hormones are making the tissue
grow, but it will still lead to a miscarriage because there still is no heartbeat.
My dr. wants me to have a D&C but I am uncertain at this time because of the
fetal growth.  I asked if I had a tilted or retroverted uterus, but got an indirect
answer.  Could this be something other than a blighted ovum?  What are my
chances of hearing a heartbeat later?

Answer
Dear Debra

When in doubt, I usually ask the patient to visit me again at clinic within 1-2 weeks to repeat the ultrasound scan and make a decision at this second visit. The hcg level is not really helpful in making a diagnosis.

Suggest a repeat ultrasound to your doctor and watch the response.

Good Luck
