Empty Sac Pregnancy: Understanding Viability & Next Steps
QuestionI had a T/V ultrasound done today that showed a sac but nothing inside the sac. I have had 3 D&C's in the past year due to 2 miscarriages. My levels were checked at 4 weeks HCG was 481 Progesterone was 70 at 5 weeks my HCG was in the 2400's. My doctor has told me to come back in a week to recheck but will not check my levels again. I'm really scared of going thru another miscarriage. What are the odds at this stage in the game that this pregnancy may be viable? I am also 32 DPO according to my BBT.
AnswerDear Samantha
It is really challenging at this gestational age, in some ocassions, to find an embryo inside the sac and this can be due to the sonographer experience, the resolution of the machine and/or abnormal position of the baby. However, once an empty sac is diagnosed, a repeat ultrasound is necessary in 1-2 weeks. This duration allows for the embryo to appear with less experienced sonographer, machines with low resolution or allow for changing the abnormal position of the baby. The results at this 2nd exam should be conclusive.
Levels of hCG cannot be relied upon to make a diagnosis as the normal range is extremely wide.
