Post-Abortion Recovery & Trying to Conceive: A Personal Story

Question
Hello, I had an abortion 11th March 2011 due to my baby not having a heart beat (it was an operation type). Me and my partner had unprotected sex 2 weeks after, after this we was more careful, we want another baby badly but we know it is wise to wait. I have not had a cycle yet, but I also know it can take up to 8 weeks (Please correct me if I am wrong). I had a check up recently from my doctor (5th April) during the ultrasound I saw what looks like an empty sac (I typed empty sac in Google, and the scan pictures seen look similar to what I saw). But my doctor did not say anything about it and I did not ask as at the time I did not think anything to it, I am not a doctor after all. My question is, do you get an empty sac every month (without fertilization) or is there a chance I am pregnant? I plan to buy a test but I do not know if it is accurate due to the operation etc. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Rebecca,
Unprotected sex two weeks after the abortion could result in a new pregnancy.
If you want to know if you are pregnant now you can do the preftest now.
If its positive, you are pregnant again.
An empty sac contains no embryo, and will be expelled by itself some day.
Could take a couple of weeks more.
There is no empty sac every month; its an unusual event, less than 1 % of the pregnancies.
Hope this answers your questions...if not: come back to me.
No unprotected sex if you do not want a baby ! (my mantra !)
good luck,
Dr Shan
