QuestionBy my LMP I am 8 weeks. My sonogram was yesterday and all they saw was a sac measuring at 30mm (they told me approximatly 6 weeks) but no baby. Is this normal. My dr drew a quanitative pregnancy test today but the result will not be back until Thursday. My LMP was 05202007 sono was 07162007.
AnswerDear Rebecca,
At 8 weeks gestation, which is what you would have been by LMP dating, we would have expected to see a fetus and heart activity. Usually at least a yolk sac or fetal pole or heart activity can be seen by 6 weeks gestation.
Unless your LMP dating is way off and you are actually not near as pregnant as you thought you were, this may be a situation where the pregnancy stopped developing. If that is the case, usually this is due to chromosomal abnormalities. The quantitative blood test will be able to tell your doctor more about where your pregnancy is at and/or should be.
I hope this has answered your question. This is never easy information to share but I think women write to me for honest, open answers. I do wish you well and I will have a good thought for you.
