Understanding Low HCG Levels and Delayed Ovulation

Question
I am a 30 your old with a 23 month old child. My last period started on July 5th 2006. I took several pregnancy tests (6) with negative results over a 2 week period. On August 17th I went in and had a blood test done that came back negative (my hcg level was at 3). The next week I went back to see my OBGYN, he did an exam and said I didn't seem I was pregnant. He asked me if I had been having any pregnancy symptoms and I had for weeks.. the metallic taste in mouth. He then asked me to do one more urine test. It came back positive. He then ordered several blood tests. I haven't heard anything back in 8 days, which is probably a good sign.. right? Anyway, I have no idea what happened, how far along I may be, when i'm due.. nothing. I'm worried that the pregnancy may be going wrong because i'm confused about why my levels were low. I did do 2 home pregnancy tests after and they came back positive. The Doctor has me scheduled 6 weeks out.. i have no answers though and am a bit stressed. What happened and what should I do?

Answer
Hi Tera,

The only true way you are going to have answers are through an ultrasound.  That will show us how long you have been pregnant.  It is hard to tell in this situation.  Sometimes this happens and HCG levels take a while to show positive results.  If it would make you fell any better since your appointment is 6 weeks out, have your doctor call in an order to the lab and have your HCG levels drawn again.  This will at least tell us if your levels are doubling as they should.  That may get you through the next 6 weeks.  Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.  Good luck!
