High HCG Levels in Early Pregnancy: What Does It Mean?

Question
I went to the hospital for light spotting at 6 weeks. They did an HCG test and my levels were 89 000! IS that extremly high? The Dr.'s do not seem concerned, but I read online that at 6 weeks the range for HCG levels is only 1,060 to 56,500. I was exactly 6 weeks pregnant that day.
2 days later they did and ultrasound and I was able to see my little bean's heart beating. I am still very concerned though about my HIGH HCG levels. Should I be? Could something be wrong with my baby?

Answer
Dear BJ,

I would not be worried about this. There is such a wide range of "normal" for hCG levels during pregnancy and each woman/pregnancy is a little different. In another week, your "normal range" will be even greater - up to 229,000! You would actually much rather have levels a bit high than too low.

It sounds like your ultrasound showed a healthy baby and your doctor is following your pregnancy appropriately. It is not terribly unusual for women to experience a little light bleeding early in pregnancy, sometimes from a bit of cervical inflammation.

Eat healthy, take those prenatal vitamins, get plenty of rest, and enjoy your pregnancy!

I wish you well and please don't hesitate to ask any further questions along the way! :-)
