Ovulation Tracking: Did I Ovulate? - Cycle Analysis

Question
QUESTION: Hi, thanks for taking the time to answer my question...well basically my last period was on SATURDAY 6TH FEB 2010 i have a 28day cycle exactly! i do use an overlation calender and check my cervical muscus so i can avoid pregnancy but my problem is i should have overlated on (day 14) 19TH FEB 1010 and i never saw any raw egg-white discharge so was unshore if i overlated or not and when i got a bit of discharge later in the day it was cloudy not clear so i doubt i was even overlating. but now 3days after when i should have overlated today (day 17) i had the clear rwa egg white discharge that was strechy, from my knowlegde that would mean i must of had an late overlation and overlated today....the other problem is that last night on (day16) i had unprotected sex with my partner so im now wondering am i at risk of pregnancy if i overlated on day 14 and had sex day 16..?? and when exactly do you think i overlated..?? day 14 or today day 17 when i got what looked like fertile muscus stretchy and clear..?? i know you can only do so much from where you are and you advise would be truly appreciated. And just incase it helps on day * i had a spot of pinkish/light red blood on a piece of tissue after i used the toliet, i am 18years of age also
thank you for ANY info you can give me
i know it may be easier for me to just goon a birth control but i am usually really good with using this method to prevent an unwanted pregnancy and i have had really bad side effects from birth control so i really dont want to use that
Thanks again
Jasmine

ANSWER: Jasmine:  I never recommend that a woman go on birth control.  It's very damaging to your health, as you know from having bad side effects from taking it before.

The advantage of knowing natural family planning techniques is that you can make very educated decisions about your fertility if you are careful.  If you are not careful, you get into quandaries like you are in now.  It sounds to me like you ovulated late and that is something you have to take into consideration when you make your decisions.  You cannot go by "what always happens" because as soon as you do, something new happens!  Life is like that, your body is like that.

Even if you ovulated on day 14, sex on day 16 is much too soon to be safe.  You need to wait until the mucus is dried up and if you are taking your temperature in the morning, for your temperature to be up for 3 days over the low temperature that you have during the first part of the month.

You took a risk and there is no way for me to say whether you are pregnant or not.  If you were taking your temperature, the temperature would stay up after you expect your period to come and not come down throughout your pregnancy.  If your temperature comes down, you will get your period.

Thank you for trusting me to answer your question.  Please let me know if I can be of any further help.

ANSWER: Jasmine:  you can start taking your temperature immediately.  The longer you gather information the more valuable it is.  Your basal temperature (before you get out of bed in the morning, at the same time every day) is specific to you and your health.  Mine was around 97.2 degrees (kind of low because I have a hypothyroid condition).  Yours may be higher.  When it goes up at least .4 degrees around ovulation, it will stay up until your period starts.  But it will have a bit of variety from day to day, so you have to put the numbers in a graph so you can visually see the pattern and watch the temps rise and fall and then rise higher for the last 10-14 days of your cycle.

This website has a chart you can print off and more information about NFP to help you put all the symptoms together.  If you read some of the detailed instructions you will be able to answer those people who tell you that you can't get pregnant 2 days after ovulation.  Not every month with sexual activity will result in pregnancy.  Our bodies are not like vending machines where you push a button and the product comes out.  As a young woman you are definitely more fertile than an older woman but the closer to ovulation that you have sex, the more likely it is that you will get pregnant eventually.

The rule is that from day 1 (the day your period starts) to about day 6 you can't get pregnant, there is no egg.  After that (day 7 until 3 days after your ovulation symptoms) you are every day more fertile and the sperm can live up to a week inside you.  So sex on day 9 and ovulation on day 14 is only 5 days.  After ovulation, the egg is no longer viable and the sperm has nothing to find and conceive with.  So until your period starts there is NO risk of pregnancy.

The morning after pill is a high dose of the birth control pill hormones.  If you had symptoms and side effects from the pill, this medicine can be just as bad.  It is also abortifacient, meaning if you are pregnant, you will be aborting your child.  "A person is a person no matter how small!" as Horton said. (Horton and the Who is a book by Dr. Seuss.)

I hope you are not pregnant and that you will learn new things about your fertility and more things about NFP, for your own good.  And I hope you don't take the morning after pill.

I hope this information is helpful.  Please let me know what happens.

QUESTION: WOW!..youre really good at what you do, but yes thank you ever soo much i have taking what you have said into consideration and i am not going to take the morning after pill i have researched the internet and you was EACTLY right about the abortion thing, i too hope that  i get lucky and still get a period although now im thinking late overlation late period? thank you very much for all your help and yes! of course i will update you nextweek when my period is due also thanks for the chart im going to start tomorrow morning :)
Thanks again Jasmine And i will be rating you a 10 out of 10!!!

Answer
Jasmine, you are still young, so even though you usually have a 28 day cycle there will be fluctuations.  As you say, a late ovulation may also mean a late period, so be patient and don't panic.

One thing to look for when you start charting is how many days between ovulation and your next period.  The shorter that length of time, the harder it will be to get pregnant in the future.  There are natural nutrional things you can do to preserve your fertility until the time you are ready to have children and you will do well to always keep that in mind.  Artificial contraception is definitely not a healthy way to treat your fertility, as you have already experienced.

Thank you for your appreciation.  I'm glad to be able to help you.  Brigid
