Understanding Post-D&C Cycles and Return of Ovulation

Question
Hello,

  Here is my story... I had a d & c June 1st due to a
blighted ovum I had a d & c when I was about 9 1/2 weeks but
the sac was only measuring at 5 1/2 weeks.

2 weeks after the d & c I had signs of ovulation egg white
cervical mucus, and my cervix had opened back up (it had
closed about a week after the d & c. We have tried on
several occasions 2 weeks after the d & c. I have been
taking hpt's to see when my I would finally get a negative
hpt. The first negative I got was Saturday the 27th of June.
I have been experiencing some pregnancy symptoms so I took a
test today July 3 and got another negative.

If we had concieved this month wouldn't I get a positive by
now? If I'm not pregnant why haven't I gotten my period??
I saw my doctor June 26th and he said I should expect my
period any day "unless your pregnant" he also said that my
uterus was back to normal and my cervix was nice and closed.

Any advice or experience. We are trying to conceive and I
either want a positive test or my period!!! But I have
neither.

Answer
Sarah,

Having a pregnancy and then the D&C procedure can cause a significant change to your cycle patterns. It is very possible that you may not have a period at all for a few months, or they may be very irregular. You may find you have period cramping and usual symptoms, then no period but a few weeks later you may find you have a very light bleed with no other symptoms at all.

Your body has been through a lot in the last few weeks, and it needs to readjust and get itself back to normal. No two women are the same, and there is no text book date for when your periods should return. HPTs can be very costly, so you may want to cut back on them and give your body chance to get back to normal. If after 8 weeks you have no periods at all then it maybe worth doing a test, or seeing your doctor, likewise if you experience extremely heavy bleeding or pains. It is good that you have received a negative HPT it does mean you body is starting to get back to normal, and also that it is unlikely any of the pregnancy was left after the D&C.

It has only been 1 month from your D&C, and 1 week from your first negative test. I really would recommend waiting a short while longer before alarm bells set to ringing.

I hope it all settles quickly for you and that you have a successful pregnancy in the near future.

Kind regards,

Christine
