Long Menstrual Cycles & Fertility Concerns: What to Know

Question
it was about a year ago when i had my thyroid removed due to graves disease. since then my cycles have been very messed up. sometimes they are 29-35 days long but the past few months they have been anywhere from 42-50 days long. i am currently on day 48 with no sign of my period. i have been searching the Internet for answers and all i keep getting is gloomy answers like not ovulating. all my husband and i want is a baby and it seems like a long shot. what does such a long cycle mean for someone on HRT and past thyroid problems? Help!!!!!!!!

Answer
Dear Nicole,

It is certainly likely that your lengthy cycles are due to inconsistent ovulation, or ovulation is not occurring.  You could consult a reproductive endocrinologist who can possibly prescribe medication to ensure that ovulation happens when its supposed to.  This is not a difficult problem to fix in many cases.
