Brown Mucus & Mild Cramps in Early Pregnancy: What to Expect

Question
I am about 6 weeks pregnant and my husband and I had intercouse on Sunday.  The following day I had thick brown mucus discharge.  I also have been having very mild, menstrual-like cramps for a few weeks.  I do not ovulate normally (once every 6 months).  I was fearful so I called the DR and they have me scheduled for an ultrasound Thursday.  I was wondering if any of what I experience is normal or not?

Answer
Hi Lindsey,

What you experienced could be normal, or it could not be.  It is best to consult with your healthcare provider.

Some women do experience spotting or brownish discharge after intercourse when they are pregnant.  This is often caused by the increased blood flow to the cervix, that can then become irritated during intercourse.

Hopefully this is what you experienced, however, seeing your healthcare provider is the best choice.
