Brown Discharge in Early Pregnancy: What to Know

Hi Mohamed,

I am in my first pregnancy and now 13 and a half weeks along. I had me first antenatal visit last week and all was well was so excited to have heard my baby's heartbeat!
I have now a concern that i am hoping to clarify a little better.
I woke up this morning with the slightest amount of brown color discharge when i wiped and i am concerned that there may be something wrong?
I have had no pink or red discharge and have no pain at all and i am just wanting to know is brown discharge normal during pregnancy?
Also,this is around the time i would be due for my period so i am also wandering if maybe this could be what it is as well?
Can you please offer some advice to help calm or ease my stress?

Dear Tania

Brown discharge is not normal during pregnancy. However, in some women, minimal bleeding may occur around the time of your menstruation at the first three months of pregnancy.

I advise a repeat ultrasound scan as this brown discharge sometimes point to unfavorable diagnoses.
