Understanding Hypothyroidism: Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

Question
Hi Sam
I recently visited my doctor to discuss what I believe are the symptoms of hypothyroidism. I had almost all of them, especialy being cold all the time, sleepyness, and inability to lose weight.
I actually had been self medicating for the last six weeks with my wife's Synthroid, 0.088mg. Most of my symptoms had improved so I wanted my own prescription. (I know I'm a bad boy-but you can buy this stuff online without a prescription!)He prescribed the same amount for me. He just left a message and said my t3 and t4 levels were normal but my TSH was suppressed. In six weeks he wants to run another test. (I cant call him back he is on vacation now) QUESTION: Do you think my TSH levels were ALREADY suppressed-hence the symptoms,or did taking my wifes Synthroid for six weeks suppress them? Thanks so much, its very complicated this stuff

Answer
Hi, Bud, I'd be glad to try and answer your question.  It probably wasn't the best idea to take your wife's Synthroid!  But I'm sure you know that.  I'm not certain of this, but I believe that may be why your TSH levels are suppressed.  That's what Synthroid does.  In people with hypothyroidism, the level of TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) is high, so taking Synthroid lowers the TSH level.  I would follow your doctor's advice to wait 6 weeks and do a retest.
