QuestionI recently got my PSA result back & it was 6.7. my doctor said he felt a slight "bump' on my prostate. He was not overly concerned, he recommended that I see a Urologist for a more in depth examination {ultrasound,biopsy}
My question is how concerned should I be that I may have cancer. I am 56 years old, I have type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and acid reflux. I take medications for all 3 conditions.
AnswerHi Izzy, I'd be glad to try and answer your question. Your PSA level is slightly high, as the normal range is about 0.0 - 4.0. There are many reasons for an increased PSA other than prostate cancer, such as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, prostate inflammation, trauma, or manipulation, prostatic infarction, recent sexual activity, urologic procedures, cystoscopy, or urinary catheterization. So your doctor is right, I wouldn't be too concerned. Do you have any other symptoms, such as trouble/painful urination? Your doctor was right in sending you to a urologist. The urologist may do another blood test, a FREE PSA test, which is more specific for prostate cancer than a regular PSA. Your urologist should be able to ease your mind. I hope I've answered your question. Take care and good luck.
