QuestionI recently had a routine Chemistry panel run as part of a volunteer project...I am also a Medical Technologist, but in Microbiology. My AST and ALT levels were slightly LOW.
I recall that high levels are linked to Liver damage, but I have not been able to find any information about what a low level might mean, if anything. I recently began medication to control high blood pressure and wondered if this might have anything to do with these levels. I don't have any overt symptoms but I am not due back to the doctor for 6 months. I get the idea there is nothing to be concerned about but was curious what low levels indicate. Thanks
AnswerSome people have AST levels below the reference range. Alcoholic liver disease is the most common cause of low AST and ALT. Other causes include uremia, malnutrition, and diabetes mellitus. That's not to say you're an alcoholic!! The doctor should look at *how* low your levels are. If they're only a tiny bit low, then there should be nothing to worry about. Also, in healthy individuals, ALT levels can vary 10 to 30% from one day to the next. ALT levels can fluctuate 45% during a single day, with highest levels occurring in the afternoon and lowest levels at night. So maybe your doctor can re-check you at your next appointment. I wouldn't be too concerned until then, since you're not having symptoms.
