Understanding Elevated TSH Levels: What Does a Result of 6.91 Mean?
QuestionMy wife's TSH came in at 6.91. The reference range used by the lab is .32-5.5. Does her result require followup with a physician? Thank you for your generous help.
Answerthat is abnormal... and further... the range realistically should be .32 to 2.0.... a higher level is abnormal and shows the thyroid is struggling to keep up the output of T4, thyroxine, the thyroid hormone.... TSH is put out by a gland in the brain, telling the thyroid to make more T4... so if tsh is higher, the thyroid isn't doing enough.... so that person needs synthroid replacement to lower TSH to nl which should be 1.0 give or take 0.5
