Impact of Gummy Vitamins on Lipid Profile Results

Question
If you were to fast for a lipid profile and you accidently took gummy kids vitamins would these make your reading inaccurate?  I had a normal cholesterol levels but elevated triglycerides. The vitamins only had 5grams of sugar.

Answer
Hi Kelli.  When I instruct patients to be fasting for blood tests, I tell them NOTHING to eat or drink (except maybe a small amount of water) for 12-14 hours.  Anything can affect the test.  However, as for the gummies, I don't think they would affect a triglyceride value that much.  I would mention to your doctor that you weren't completely fasting for this test and let him decide if your triglycerides were falsely elevated.
