Understanding Your Anion Gap: Diet & Lab Results

Question
I had some lab tests done and I have several highs and lows on them. I have recently been on a low carb diet and I think that has affected some of the results. I have a low anion gap which is 3.0 and the normal is 5.0 to 14.0. Also the anion gap w/k+ is 8.0 and the normal is 10.0 to 20.0. Could my dieting affected that particular test. I have looked up a few things on that on the internet and I am hoping that is what it is.
Thanks,
Ann

Answer
Hi Ann.  Anion gap (AG or AGAP) is a value calculated using the results of an electrolyte panel.  The occurrence of an abnormal anion gap is non-specific but can suggest certain kinds of metabolic abnormalities, such as starvation or diabetes, or the presence of a toxic substance, such as oxalate, glycolate, or aspirin.  Were the results of your electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate) normal? Since the anoin gap is a calculated value, then obviously it will be affected by an abnormal electrolyte result. Sometimes a lower anion gap is just normal for a person.
