VBAC After C-Section: Safety & Considerations for Moms

Question
I am a 28 year old mother of 3, all who were delivered by c-section.  My incisions on uterus and abdomen were low incisions, my question is would it be safe for me to opt a vaginal birth for my next pregnancy?

Answer
The risk of rupture of the uterus during labor is 1%, due to weakness of the area of the previous incision. We perform ALL cesarean sections with a low incision these days, and the decision as to whether you can attempt VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) is based on whether the same situation is present at the time of labor or not. What was the reason you had the first, second, and third cesarean section. If you have a contracted pelvis, or the babies were larger than 9lbs, or there was another reason to have a cesarean, the reason may occur again. HOwever, if you had a cesarean due to a breech presentation, or rupture of membranes, or failure to progress in labor, etc, you may be able to try for a vaginal birth. Discuss it with your obstetrician.
