Energy Levels & Medications: Exploring Vitamin Interactions & Energy Boosting Foods

Question
I have a serious lack of energy. I take a multiple vitamin every day and 3 prescriptions - metaformin (850 mg per day), zocor (40mg)
and monopril HCT 10/12.5.  Is it possible the vitamins are making me lazy?  If so, are there particular vitamins that can make me sluggish?Somone once told me too much of some vitamins can have a reverse effect.  Are there particular vitamins that boost energy?  Can you recommend any high energy foods?  I am overweight, have high blood pressure, borderline diabetes and high cholesterol. I recently started taking my pills at night instead of in the am - could that contribute to my lack of energy? Another question I have,I use a juicer and wonder how long the juice takes to lose its vitamin content? I've been told after one day but that does not make sense since fruits stay good in the refrigerator sometimes for over a week?  Thank you.

Answer
Frank,

You've got quite a few questions.  Lack of energy could be a variety of things, but I seriously doubt it has anything to do with your juicer or the vitamins you're taking.  I may be related to the types of food you're eating, and whether or not you're exercising.

My suggestion would be to limit the number of carbohydrates you eat.  I am not advocating an Atkins or other low carb diet, simply suggesting you pay attention to the types of food you eat.  Stick with low fat, high protein foods, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and try and minimize the complex and simple carbs.

Start an exercise program and get some of that weight off (with your docotr's OK, of course).  Start slow.  It may seem somewhat contradictory, but if you exercise you'll wind up having more energy.  If you drop the weight, you may be able to drop some of the medications.

Sometimes medications can cause people to feel a bit tired.  While not typical, you may bring this up to your doctor.

Hope that helps.
