Understanding Hypothyroidism: Interpreting Blood Test Results & Additional Tests

Question
A recent blood test showed my TSH level to be high and my Free T4 level to be low, indicating hypothyroidism. My primary care doctor is having just these two tests run a second time, however he said nothing about a high neutrophils and low lymphocyte counts, or my high LDL cholesterol. Do these results have any link to the hypothyroidism. Also, why wouldn't he test me for the thyroid antibodies to determine why my thyroid is producing so much TSH. He also didn't test for Free T3 thyroid hormone, which could also be low. Do you think I should see an Endocrinologist?

Answer
Hi Maria.  Without knowing actual numbers of your test results, I can't really help too much.  Your numbers may be just slightly out of range, which would could be normal.  Or if your numbers are very high/low then I could say with some certainty what's going on.  Your doctor may want to repeat them to verify the results, which is a good idea if you're having symptoms.  Like I said, in response to your high neutrophils count, low lymphocyte count, and high LDL cholesterol, without actual numbers, I can't help you.  I can say that these 3 tests are not related to the thyroid tests.  If, after repeating the test results, your doctor tells you you have hypothyroidism, it wouldn't hurt to see an endocrinologist (especially if your a "new" case) if your insurance will pay for it.
