Understanding High Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW) & Heart Pain

Question
Hello...
I recently had labs done.I've had a High Red Cell Dist. Width (I don't know what that is). The count was 47.6 fl
The test shows it should not be above 46.
What does this mean. Why this is happening?
I've been having pain in heart for 4 months now.Is it related of blood cell width? I really don't get any answer from my doctor on this. Or what to do about the pain. And doctor gave me a tablet named Matilda-ER for Vitamin purpose.
And I had Mean Corpuscular Volume 102.8 fl in my report and The test shows it should not be above 100 fl.
What is your advice ? Which vegetables or fruits I should take for maintaining those things or what I should do ? Note that I am pure Vegetarian.

Answer
Hi, I'd be glad to try and answer your question.  Both of the results you listed are only slightly out of normal range, so they are unlikely to be of any clinical slignificance.  But to explain what the tests are: Red cell distribution width (RDW) is a calculation of the variation in the size of your RBCs. In some anemias, the amount of variation in RBC size (along with variation in shape) causes an increase in the RDW. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) is a measurement of the average size of your RBCs. The MCV is elevated when your RBCs are larger than normal. When the MCV is decreased, your RBCs are smaller than normal.  Like I said, your results are normal.  Especially as long as those two were the only results that were slightly out of range.
