Understanding Elevated BUN Levels: Causes & What to Do

Question
I get blood work every 6 months as I take Zocor. My Dr. has not mentioned my steadily rising Bun numbers. I see on the last report that it is 27-which is the top of the "normal range"list. Should I go to a uroligist, change my diet or what? Thank you Rita

Answer
The BUN probably has more to do with a combination of the amount of protein you eat and the fact that you are likely fasting and haven't been drinking fluids prior to your blood test.

As a test, prior to your next blood work, try increasing the amount of water you drink the night before and morning of your blood test.  Plain water will not affect the fasting nature of the test.

I not suggest you see a urologist, but rather discuss the issue with your doctor.
