Understanding Fertility Blood Tests: What You Need to Know

Question
A friend told me about a blood test that checks the level of something in your blood to determine how easily you could get pregnant. It is supposed to test your hormone levels. Results below 10 mean it should be fairly easy to conceive. 10-15 mean you could but you would need medical help. Over 15 mean you probably won't without an egg donor. Do you know what this test is called? How accurate is it?

Answer
Dear Sue,

I haven't heard of one single blood test that gives these results accurately.  Your best bet is to get a panel of blood tests to check your follicle stimulating hormones, luteinizing hormone, progesterone and estradiol levels, which are all important to getting pregnant.  A doctor can order and interpret the results of this test.  However, a blood test alone cannot tell whether you'll get pregnant easily, as tubal factors are equally important and can only be checked with an xray.
