QuestionMy son has a fever of 103 and the ER did blood work, but I want a second opinion of what the results show. His WBC is 22.3 <Range= 4.5-13.5>, Seg. Neutrophils is 94 <Range= 23-45>, Lymp is 3 <Range= 35-70>, Glucose is 116 <Range= 70-106>, Creatinine is 0.47 <Range= 0.66-1.25>. Thats is that was out of the normal ranges, everything else was within the normal ranges. Please give me your opinion on what is going on with him. The ER doc didn't really have an answer for me.
Thanks,
Kelly S.
AnswerHi Kelly. I'd be glad to try and answer your question and give you my opinion. Without knowing your son's age and what (besides the fever) his symptoms were at the time of this lab work, I can only go by what abnormal lab results you provided. Your son's WBC (white blood cell) count is high, which indicates an infection, and a clue to what type is the neutrophil (one type of WBC) count. Typically in a bacterial infection, the neutrophil count is high, such as in your son's case. So I would say that he probably had (or has, unless he was treated, possibly with antibiotics) a bacterial infection. The glucose may have been slightly high because your son may have something to eat or drink within a few hours of the blood test and the creatinine is only slightly low, which may be from the infection. Hope this helps, Kelly.
