Understanding a Positive Blood Test After an Abortion: What Could It Mean?

Question
i had an abortion on the 21st Oct with the manual suction method and i did an ultrasound 3 days later and the doctor assured me that the pregnancy is terminated.  i did 2 urine tests after that and they were both negative. i have not had sex every since. however, i did a blood test today and it was positive.  what does this mean? am i still pregnant? could the abortion be incomplete?

Answer
Hi, lama,

Please clarify whether the first letter of your name is an L or an I.

This type of situation is really far more common than most people realize.

There is a possibility that the abortionist missed your baby entirely. If he had missed only partly, then I would venture to guess that you wouldn't first have negative tests and then positive. Also, depending on how far along you were and what the ultrasound shows, the baby could simply not have been in the picture. It's pretty early after your abortion to tell. Only a doctor who examines and tests you can tell you for sure what is going on. Since you didn't tell me how far along you were, that also means less information that I'd really like to have. What I suggest is that you go to a doctor (a different one, who won't have a vested interest in fudging), and have him examine and test you. Nobody can really tell you anything specific about your body and your pregnancy over the internet, not even a doctor.

Let me know what you find out. Take care.
