Understanding Your Thyroid Lab Results: A Doctor's Perspective
QuestionI recently had some thyroid lab work done. Here are the results:
TSH: 1.02 mcU/mL
Free T4: 0.9 ng/dL
Free T3: 3.2 pg/mL
I am a 33 year old female. My doctor advised that these were all normal, though I note that the Free T4 is borderline. I do have many of the symptoms of hypothyroid. Do you think this is worth getting a second opinion?
AnswerHi Jocelin. Your doctor is right, your results are all well within normal. It's unlikely that a patient with a hypothyroid could have normal results, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. There are many other conditions that may cause the same symptoms as hypothyroid though, so I recommend that you check with your doctor if you're still having symptoms. There are other tests he/she could check to give you some answers.
