QuestionJust recently had a CBC and the only abnormality was MPV. It came back 6.3 with a range of 7.8 - 11.0. However, the other results were normal but on the low end...
WBC 5.4 Range: 4.5 - 10.5
RBC 4.06 Range: 4.0 - 6.0
Hgb 12.2 Range: 11.0 - 18.0
Hct 35.7 Range: 35.0 - 60.0
Plt 191 Range: 150 - 450
I have low ferritin. Are these lab results indicative of iron deficiency alone or potentially a more serious problem? Any reason to be concerned? Thanks!
AnswerI can't tell if you are male or female... most females who are menstruating chronically play catch up with their iron stores and that is reflected by the Ferritin blood test. When it gets really low, then the Hb starts dropping and the MCV goes down. Then it becomes iron deficiency anemia. Until then, only low iron which causes no symptoms.
In someone without a known blood loss (menstruating) then the low iron should be looked into further to see whether it is an iron absorbtion problem or an iron loss problem. (Hidden bleeding)
Otherwise your tests are normal. MPV.. has no clinical significance.
