QuestionDear Dr. edward. i did a blood test on 27 days of my cycle which is between 30 and 32 days. and we were trying to get pregnant all the result was good only i notice that the prolactine level is 41.01ng/ml the normal values:
menstrual: 1.3-29.12(protocol:EP5-T2)
for menopause: 0.7-16.
So what does it means is it a very high level for the prolactine.
AnswerHello Gyn from Lebanon,
Indeed a prolactin level of 41 is elevated. Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary. When it is elevated it indicates that the pituitary is producing too much hormone, which could be due to an enlarged pituitary gland or a pituitary tumor. However, prolactin is a very volatile hormone and is affected by many things including time of the day, fasting or after means, exercise, hormonal changes, before/after sleep, stress, etc. Therefore, what you need to do is do another level but this one should be first thing in the morning after fasting overnight. The level should be less than 20. If it continues to be over 20, then you should see a medical endocrinologist for further evaluation.
