Low Potassium Levels & Potential Health Concerns: What to Know
QuestionI have a dear friend who has been put off by her Dr. for months. Her potassium level is so low it doesn't even register. They keep upping her potassium but it does not help. I am concerned. She is not feeling well at all and I think I heard that low potassium levels and cancer can go hand in hand. Is this a possiblilty?
Answercancer and potassium... I can't make the connection, although low low potassium despite replacement suggests a kidney or hormone problem. Sounds like she needs a thorough endocrine (hormone) workup, including cortisol levels, and magnesium levels. This is critical, because a low potassium can cause abnormal heart rythyms that can kill. Push her to get this evaluated as soon as possible.
