Low Potassium: Treatment Ineffectiveness & IV Options - Patient Experience

Question
Recently (this week) it was discovered that I have a potassium level of 2.8. My doc has called me in a potassium rx which I have started 2x daily, now for 4 days. My symptons have not changed, the hands & feet pins and needles then numbness. The pvc's and the exhaustion. I was rechecked again this morning, and my level remains at 2.8. I have asked my Doc if I would benefit from an IV potassium to boost me up. She states that I should continue on the meds as prescribed and recheck again at the end of the week. Should I be more concerned as the symptons have not abated? Or should I stay the course and give the meds a chance to work?

Answer
First of all, why did your potassium go low......

are you on a water pill like lasix or HCTZ that would lower it..... if not, then there is a possibility of a kidney problem.... not a bad one, called renal tubular acidosis.   Also, vomiting or diarrhea can do it.

I am not convinced that your symptoms are related to that abnormal lab value..... it is possible your magnesium is low and an easy fix is to take over the counter mag  600 mg twice a day.... if it is normal, it won't hurt you and it is cheap.

But, I would also have thyroid functions and a B12 level checked if you have not done that yet.

I hope this helps.

PS... and no, you don't need IV potassium.... keep on the oral and that will correct it.
