Understanding Spotting Between Periods: Causes & What to Watch For

Question
I have been charting my cycle (just mucus) for 9 months. I also use a fertility monitor. My last exam and pap were 6 months ago (clean bill of health).

This month's chart has been very strange. I spotted for 12 days (mostly just when I used the bathroom, but some of the days in between). The color ranged from red to brown. It seemed to be waning after 9 days, then I saw it became thick, creamy, and bright red. Four days later, my monitor read peak and my cervical mucus was thick, creamy, yellow, kind of like snot (on day 25 of my cycle).

This is the latest in my cycle I have ovulated. I typically have a few days of spotting, but never this long.

Should I be concerned? I am in my early 30s. There is no chance that I am pregnant (have not had sex).

Answer
Hello Ann from the US.,

This is an unusual cycle, but I cannot tell you what the bleeding is from.  There are many possibilities.  The cervical mucus is not correct either.  Fertile mucus is very clear, thin and stretchy.  I think that you should wait and see what happens in the next cycle.  If you continue to have this unusual bleeding pattern then you should see your gynecologist for an evaluation.
