Endometriosis & Lupron: Cycle Recovery & Trying to Conceive

Question
I was diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis in February. I have had 2 lupron injections (1-3.75mg in March and one 11.25mg in April.) I'm wondering how long it will take for my period to return? I am TTC asap. Do I need to resume my period before I can start trying?

Answer
Hello Bridget from the U.S.,

It will take anywhere from 2-4 months for the ovary to reset and your cycles to resume.  The only reason you need to wait for a period to start trying is because that is the only way you will know that the ovarian function has reset and you are ovulating again.  Of course, you can continue to have intercourse and if you are lucky, you might hit that first ovulation.

Keep in mind, however, that stage IV endometriosis means that there is a large amount of endometriosis and scar tissue within the pelvis. The majority of these patients will not be able to conceive naturally because the pelvis remains inflamed and the scar tissue reforms as well.  These patients will need to proceed to IVF in order to get pregnant in order to bypass the hostile pelvis and scar tissue.  You should consider going in that directly if you want to become pregnant ASAP.
