Endometriosis and Shoulder Pain: Exploring Treatment Options

Question
I was diagnosed with endo in Nov 2007 during a tubal.  My uterus has been cauturized due menorrhagia.  In April 2009 I had my left ovary and endo cyst removed and remaining visual endo treated during the surgery.  I have now realized that I have reoccuring pain behind my left shoulder blade that coincides with my menstrual cycle.  I considered taking both ovaries and uterus in April and did not.  Now I am trying to decide if I should use Lupron or have another surgery.  I hate taking medicine.  I have been to another doctor to rule out other possible causes for the should blade pain.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Answer
Dear Beth
I found the following article online...you will find it interesting in regard to your shoulder pain:

"Endometrial growths have also been found outside the abdomen, in the lung, arm, thigh, and other locations, but these are uncommon. Endometrial growths are generally not malignant or cancerous, they are a type of normal type of tissue outside the normal location. However, in recent decades there has been an increased frequency of malignancy occurring or being recognized in conjunction with endometriosis. Like the lining of the uterus, endometrial growths usually respond to the hormones of the menstrual cycle. They build up tissue each month, break down, and cause bleeding."

Also, I would steer clear of the Lupron, I am really not a fan of this med. I have heard horror stories from women on Lupron, they include: nausea, dizziness, high blood pressure, etc.

I don't like alot of synthetic meds either. I do use an anti inflammatory called Anaprox, during my periods. It helps my pain, bloating and overall horrible feeling. The best thing about this med, as it is used as needed. I even take one or two while I am ovulating to reduce the discomfort. Ask your doctor about it.

I hope you find relief soon. Endo is a devastating disease that truly interrupts a womans life.
