Medical Doctor Education & Residency Requirements: A Guide

Question
Hello, Dr. Aukerman,
I am a published author finishing a manuscript.   I have come to an area requiring some details about education requirements for a "Medical Doctor".
Any information you could share relating to becoming a doctor would be very appreciated.  My main focus of explanation would be:  required education, length of residency (anything in between?).  I am not writing anything technical. Basically what I would need to explain is how the young doctor got from point A. (collage) to point Z.  (entering into a private practice), maybe the time line one would follow, etc.
I know your time is valuable and I thank you in advance for any information you could lend, your time and your expertise.
Sincerely, Lee Johnson

Answer
My main focus of explanation would be:
required education, length of residency (anything in between?). medical school is 4 years and residencies range from 3 years for primary care to as many as 8 years for surgical subspecialty work. These can be followed by 1-2 year fellowships for further training. OK?

If you need more technical information, you may want to search for the AAMC, the american association of medical colleges which regulates the medical education in the US. OK?
