QuestionDear Dr. Cusumano,
A few months ago, I wrote to you about my husband having been recently put on oxygen for his COPD, and you were very helpful. He has since gone out of his hazardous workplace, full of chemicals and welding fumes and is doing somewhat better, although he has his bad days. His doctor put him on theophylline about the same time he went out on disability and he is having trouble sleeping at night, could it be the theophylline or possibly anxiety of not being the "breadwinner?" His doctor has prescribed him some sleeping meds, dalmane, but it had no effect.....can you suggest something other then theophylline? Also, I have heard that theophylline is the type of drug that once you are put on it, you will be on it for life? Is that true? Thank you for all your help, Melanie Easley
AnswerHi Melanie,
Theophylline is probably the cause of his sleeplessness. He needs blood work to be sure that his Theo. levels are not toxic.
An alternative for that drug is Singulair. It is side effect free and MAY be able to have the same therapeutic effect. Also he should be on a new drug called Spiriva. It is an inhaler and has shown amazing success in helping people with COPD. It isn't curative but lessens symptoms and improves lung function.
