Provera and Fertility: Understanding Ovulation & Menstrual Cycles

Question
I am currently trying to get pregnant. I do not have normal or any for that matter menstural cycles. He gave me provera as a means to menstrate. I was wondering. If I take only one to I guess you could say enduce a period. Would that jump start my normal period and allow me to ovulate?

Answer
Dear Nicole

Provera does not usually do any help to someone trying to get pregnant. Induction of ovulation using agents such as clomid, nolvadex and other similar drugs are usually helpful. Provera induce withdrawal bleeding which is considered by patients to be a normal menstruation. Such treatment with provera if considered with the hope to start spontaneous ovulation and subsequent menstruation is rarely successful. The proper treatment for you should be induction of ovulation rather than induction of menstruation.

If you never experienced menstruation, you then need a full investigations to detect the reason for primary amenorrhea. If you ever had bleeding, even 1 single drop, then this is a case of secondary amenorrhea and is easy to treat.

I hope that the information are useful and I wish you well.
