If a woman is not on birth control, yes it is possible for her to become pregnant while on her period. This is for two reasons:

1. Sperm can live for up to 5 days in a woman's body. So if she has sex during her period, then ovulates soon after her period has ended, there could be sperm left to fertilize the egg if this has occurred within 5 days of having sex.

2. Some women have a light bleed or spotting during ovulation and may mistake this for their period.

While the chances may be lower than other times during the month, the best thing to do is to use some form of birth control during this time.
