Scraped Elbow on Child: Healing Concerns & Adhesive Allergy
QuestionI 7 year old fell down on the concrete while playing and scaped her elbow las Wednesday. It's already Sunday and thewound has not heal. I thought children's wound heals faster. I believe she is allergic to bandages/adhesive. The wounds usually gets worse if I put a bandage on and it will have red bumps around it. SOmetimes it will even have a yellowish discharge. I usually use gauze pads and paper tape to wrap the wounds; but I don't uderstand why it always take forever for the wounds to heal. I notice that if I put the Neosporin on it; it seems to make it worse. What can I do?
AnswerHi Joycre,
NEVER use Neosporin for anything, in fact throw it away.
Just keeping it clean with soap and water is the best treatment. You can get self adhesive Telfa pads which should lessen the reaction to the bandages. The elbow heals slowly because it is connstantly bending and the wound can't heal adequately. If it gets red, hot or swollen, then it is probably infected and needs medical attention. The yellow drainage you see is the body's normal healing process.
